I snapped this picture with my blackberry this morning. It’s car sitting in front of me at a stoplight.

In case you can’t tell, yes that emblem is a shark with the word “LAWYER” in the middle:

I don’t want to judge.. but WOW!

Hopefully you can tell this guy is driving a Mazda 3. (Good choice, hot shot lawyer guy.)

Brother also had a “UVA LAW” sticker on his back windshield that I couldn’t capture with my blackberry, which explains UVA’s deep run in ATL’s Douchiest Law School Contest.

The Hypo Staff will be off for a few days, preparing both to eat our body weight in bird and sides and for exams which start a week from today (yikes!). In the mean time, we wish the best for you and yours and leave you with this quote:

Speechless

I’m simply speechless. I’ll just copy the story here in its entirety:

A Lexington man, now famous for how many times he’s been arrested, is again making headlines.

Yesterday, Henry Earl answered to a judge on a charge of alcohol intoxication – a crime he’s now committed one-thousand times.

Henry Earl is a man well known inside the Fayette County Detention Center and well beyond the walls. He’s an internet sensation for the sheer number of times he’s been arrestted.
His latest arrest coming last night.

“Mr. Earl, you are before the court on the charge of alcohol intoxication.”
“Yes sir.”

And while being arraigned, as Earl usually is on his charge, he entered his usual plea.

“How do you wish to plea on this?”
“Guilty your honor.”
“Are you sure you want to do that?”
“It’s my right.”

But this time, unlike the many, many, many times before, Earl was thrown a curveball by Judge Gary Payne.

“For your anniversary we’ll give you a thousand days.”
Needless to say, the sentenced shocked Earl.

“Do you think that’s appropriate?”
“No sir.”

“That’s a long time.”
“That’s a lot of time but you can do it.”
“No sir, a thousand we’ll see you on Thursday.”

“You’ll see me Thursday. Yea, we’ll be counting down the days.” You’ll be down to 998.”

If you’re wondering what one-thousand arrests on alcohol charges equals, here’s a look at Henry Earl’s history.

In all, he’s spent 4,123 days in jail.

Thirty-five of his 1,000 arrests have been this year alone, landing him behind bars 189 days in 2008 so far.

On average, Earl is out of jail about two days before he lands back behind bars again.

Extra Last Minute Assignments

I’m generally busy at work. So when I get an extra reading assignment from a professor at 2:20 p.m. for that night’s class, I’m not happy. I got such an assignment today – and I was livid. Particularly since in tonight’s Torts class we’re discussing proximate cause and that hopelessly ridiculous case, Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad.

So, I finally get to a point where I can take a break and look at the supplemental reading and it starts with this little video about a tanker spilling oil into the water (ala the Wagon Mound Cases):

The other bit of “supplemental reading” was a column by law professor Andrew McClurg that contained this little snippet of the “in-chambers colloquy” between the judges that wrote opinions in the case (Cardozo for the majority and Andrews in dissent):

Cardozo: Let’s really mess with their heads by writing about two completely different subjects. I’ll go on and on about duty, then just when they think they might be figuring things out, you start talking about proximate cause. Use that ridiculous hypo you’re so fond of.

Andrews: The chauffeur and the car full of dynamite? That’s no hypo. It’s a joke. The chauffeur says to the guy with the dyna-

Cardozo: Whatever. Just cram it in there somehow. And remember-the overriding goal is to write an opinion that makes the reader think he’s losing his mind.
