Sports Talk Radio Callers
I’m a pretty big sports talk radio fan. We have a great afternoon drive time show here in the DC market. The callers drive me nuts though.
Have you heard these guys? They – and some ladies – call in and talk about how the Redskins should be calling this play and that. How they know why Jason Campbell is terrible. Or how to fix the punting problems.
The trouble is, you don’t know jack about how to play or coach NFL football. Okay you know – a lot of us know – enough to B.S. with our friends at the bar. But to subject the entire radio listening public to your inane theory about the zone blocking scheme borders on insanity.
The only thing a sports talk radio caller should ever call in to talk about is toughness, general style of play, stadium conditions, and ticket prices.
These are the only things that fans can speak credibly about on the radio. That’s where our voice lends perspective to the bloviating opinions of the talk radio hosts. They relate to the value of the fan’s investment vis a vis the game’s play and team’s management. They are what gives the fan standing to criticize – or praise – their team. I’d much rather hear a caller yell into the phone about how the Redskins played like a bunch of sissies on Sunday night than some dumb idea about a trade or the pass routes they should be running.
Beyond that a fan on the radio is just blowing steam.
And with that I’ll shut up and return to watching game film.
