My First Snow Day

So, a co-worker asked how long it had been since I had a snow day home from school. It would have been super-cool if I could have said something like, “Man not since the Blizzard of ‘74.” You know, some date that really put some age on me, maybe some gray hair. Actually, my last snow day was January 2000. We got a pretty good ice and snow storm in Richmond (where my college is located) and, if I remember correctly, we missed two class days.

Sadly, I could not follow up my rather boring college kid blizzard capers with an inspiring rendition of my wild snow night plans, with all the reading I have to do. I must be getting old.

My favorite snow day has to be the blizzard we got in 1993 (I think that was the year; I was a freshman in high school). I spent the night at a friend’s house so we could get first tracks on the sledding hill and then we played the most epic game of snow football known to man - 4.5 hours of smashmouth football. (I’ll admit to wearing sleeves though)

what was your favorite snow day?

True story. First snow day my freshamn year in college, we hiked a mile and change down the road to the local store with a sled to get beer. Stacked it on the sled and came back to campus like cave men who had killed a mammoth.

I’ve been a Midwest girl my whole life so I can’t say snow days are that foreign to me! Grew up in Ohio, went to college in Indiana, and went to law school in Michigan…there’s plenty of memories of snow days. But probably college was one of the most memorable! One winter at Notre Dame, they had to cancel a day of final exams on campus. I think it may have been my sophomore year in 2001. First of all, Notre Dame was never one to close their campus like that and during final exams??? That was the first time they did that in the school’s history. Yes, I got a snow day instead of a football national championship during my four years there! Apparently all of South Bend was closed so they had not choice. It ended up creating a real frenzy on campus though because they scheduled a lot of make-up final exams in the evenings the end of the period when people had scheduled flights and stuff. Lucky boring me was going back to Ohio so no worries there other than hoofing it through the Midwest!

Once in high school in Parma, Ohio (the largest suburb of Cleveland), we had a whole week off after our scheduled winter break because the temperatures were like -30.

And that’s all I have of tales from the great Midwest…

Excellent tales from the Midwest NDBellaRosa.

I must say the extended snow break is quite money. We had two days off my senior year in HS.

Though I can only imagine how crazy it must have gotten on campus to have exams postponed. The combination of stress, lack of sleep, and general zaniness must have made for a fun time. Actually you said it best - must have been a “real frenzy.”
